"The Final Experiment" is Lucassen's first album under the pseudonym Ayreon. For this first attempt, he chose, as for his successors, to base his music on a complete history. It begins in 2048. Humanity has virtually destroyed itself. Its survival depends on the Final Experiment. Scientists of the 21st century have developed a new program called "Time Telepathy". By using this process they have sent a vision of the decline of mankind into the past. These transmissions were received by the mind of a young British minstrel who lives in the 6th century. His name is "Ayreon".
Here is the translation of the prologue. To realize this album Lucassen has, as afterwards, surrounded himself with musicians and especially with singers who interpret the role of a protagonist of history. Attractive, isn't it?
Connoisseurs and amateurs of Ayreon will absolutely not be disorientated by the style of "Final Experiment". The multiple singers who succeed one another bring a unique atmosphere to the work that can be described as a metal opera.
As usual, the omnipresent keyboards with original sounds do most of the work. The music blends totally with the story, soft and atmospheric then more metal with sumptuous riffs and guitar solos. As the tale takes place partly in the 6th century, a strong medieval inspiration is felt throughout the album which, despite everything, doesn't lose its modern side at all.
As far as synthetic sounds are concerned, variety is the order of the day with harpsichord, acoustic guitar, trumpets and so on. Female choirs are very often added to the melody to bring even more depth to the already very thorough compositions.
With "Final Experiment" Lucassen has found his own style. As good as some of its successors, this album is a masterstroke. The alchemy between the lyrics and the story is perfect and from the very first bars, one is immediately drawn into a world past, present and future. An album that suits fans as well as those who would discover Ayreon. - Official website
