Most of us were introduced to progressive rock in the most conventional of ways, with bands such as Genesis, Yes, Marillion and Dream Theater, followed by King Crimson, Gentle Giant and Porcupine Tree out of curiosity. Yet, if there's one band few of us have heard of, and yet it's of the same stature as these progressive rock dinosaurs, it's Anglagard.

Their previous production, "Hybris", was an excellent album, but it was handicapped by the poor quality of its vocals. With "Epilog", this shortcoming has purely and simply been eliminated, the whole album being instrumental with the exception of a few vocal passages that are more effects than real singing. If the first album showed real potential, this is confirmed beyond all expectations with this second opus. The recipe is certainly still the same, based on a basic rock band with the addition of a transverse flute, compositions combining sophisticated melodies and convoluted rhythmic structures, and perfect technique. The mix of all this will not let you rest for 45 minutes.

"Epilog" is a suite of three key tracks, 'Höstsejd', 'Skogsranden' and 'Sista somrar', the other tracks being merely transitions, an introduction and a conclusion designed to let you catch your breath. The three monuments of "Epilog" are pieces from which you'll come away dazzled by so much imagination, mastery and finesse.

It's astonishing that a band with such a personality doesn't enjoy a better place in the memory of progressive rock. To fix this, all Yes and King Crimson fans are advised to rush out and buy this album, and at the same time discover the incredible band that is Anglagard.

BLACK METAL - Metal, Progressive, Black or Folk, Vintersorg skillfully mixes genres in this "Visions From The Spiral Generator", an album to be ranked among the best releases of the year 2002.
