After the excellent reception given to the no less excellent Second Hands released in 2007, the Unicorn label has the very good idea to bring out The Gourishankar's second album, initially released as a self-release in 2003.

Without beating about the bush - the band won't let us do so, the 2 minutes of the introduction being the only moment of respite of the album - let's have a look at the different styles proposed in this album: electronic music, neo-progressive a la Marillion's "Season's End" period, progressive 70's made in Genesis, space prog in the Ozric Tentacles style, metal prog, but also furious progressive rock in the King Crimson style, church choirs, a crazy trumpet, a romantic ballad... And sometimes all within the same track, so much so that the listener ends up being completely disoriented by the incessant changes of themes and sounds.

The longest tracks are of course the most exciting: 'Autumn Frost' and the superb 'Sweet Earth' will undoubtedly please the most demanding fans. Only open minds will be able to survive the incessant maelstrom of sound that The Gourishankar delivers.

Unfortunately, some small failures come to darken this hitherto enthusiastic presentation. A few dispensable tracks to start with, such as the experimental 'In The Hop' and 'Close To Death', which are totally uninteresting. But also a production that is not always at its best, and vocals that are painful when pushed to their limits in the noisiest passages.

In spite of these little annoyances, "Close Grip" is a worthy precursor of Seconds Hands, the latter having taken up and perfected the recipes initiated on this album. To be recommended to any progressive lover in the broadest sense of the term, the one who won't be afraid to let himself be abused at the risk of losing, temporarily of course, his traditional musical references.

OTHER REVIEWS
JUDAS PRIEST: Sin After Sin (1977)
HEAVY METAL - "Sin After Sin" offers a muscular and rhythmic Hard Rock for the time. Close to the previous opus, Judas Priest hardened the tone significantly to obtain a sound close to what will soon be called Heavy Metal.
SEPULTURA: A-Lex (2009)
THRASH - Concept album based on Anthony Burgess' book, Orange Mécanique, "A-Lex" is a concentrate of brutality close to "Arise" or "Beneath The Remains".
