"No samples, keyboards or synthesizers used in the making of this recording". This simple sentence written inside the booklet that decorates the album announces the content: Rage Against The Machine is not here to make in the pompous or the finesse. The 10 tracks that make up the album are a true condensation of raw metal, heavy guitars and heavy bass. Besides the drummer who hit his drums with rage, the bassist who grooves and coats Zack de la Rocha's phrasing in a deep sound, it's obviously the guitar and the lyrics that will draw the attention.

Speaking of guitarists, we often refer to David Gilmour or Eric Clapton for the '70s, Eddie Van Halen for the '80s. After listening to Take The Power Back, Fistful of steel and Wake Up, you will probably all agree that Tom Morello has not usurped his title of "guitarist of the '90s". The touch is sometimes light and offers some interesting soli, sometimes heavy and brutal.

Lyrically, don't expect any kind of relationship gone bad or friendship broken. No, for Rage Against The Machine, the enemy, it is the system and the solution is insubordination or revolt. It's hard not to raise your fist when you listen to Killing In The Name, which turned out to be the band's biggest success and, as a result, its trademark.

There is no need to go into detail about this album which was so successful that it became a rock classic like Joshua Tree or Violator. If you are of the new generation and you have never heard of this band, don't limit yourself to its Funk, Rap or Neo Metal label to judge it, it would be a shame to miss this classic among classics.

PROGRESSIVE ROCK - The final album for IQ keyboardist Martin Orford, "The OId Road" is full of catchy themes, moving moments, shivers of happiness and amazing guitar solos.
