"Malgré quelques problèmes de jeunesse, "Keeper Of The Seven Keys, Part I" reste un excellent album de Speed/Power Metal à l'allemande et permet à Helloween de passer dans une autre catégorie."

Helloween is a German Speed/Power Metal band that signs with this "Keeper Of The Seven Keys, Part I" its second real album, after "Walls Of Jericho", which the mediocre vocals left anecdotal. The main factor that makes the band take off is the arrival of Michael Kiske on vocals. Indeed, Kai Hansen, who was playing this role on "Walls Of Jericho" decides to concentrate on the guitar.

After a short introduction, the album starts very strong with a "I'm Alive" very influenced by Iron Maiden ("Powerslave"). Kiske's high-pitched voice reminds of Bruce Dickinson, the guitars complement each other in the same way as Murray and Smith, and the formula works quite well. If "Twillight Of The Gods" suffers from a production that often makes the choruses too pompous and from the absence of rhythm guitar, the rest of the album is much better. Certainly the refrains are always as heady on "A Tale That Wasn't Right", but how not to be submerged by the emotion provided by the extraordinary vocals of Kiske. Then comes "Future World", very catchy and with excellent soli, future trademark of the band.

Special mention for "Halloween", the first epic track of Helloween and probably the best of the series that will follow. This song alone justifies the listening of the album. We find, with a cheeky coherence, all the elements that will make the glory of Helloween. Kiske's vocals are indescribable, close to perfection, the rhythmic guitars finally appear to release catchy riffs and the soli duels fuse without repeating themselves and respecting the atmosphere of the song.

This album certainly has the small flaws that are frequent in a band at the beginning of its career, like a production that, without being bad, can be inadequate, but the energy and the desire are there and they allow "Keeper Of The Seven Keys" to be a reference album and to prepare the ground for "Keeper Of The Seven Keys, Part II".
