The year 1983 is a milestone in the history of thrash metal. Indeed, it is this year that Metallica's "Kill'Em All" is released, followed in December by "Show No Mercy" by Slayer. Two mythical first albums for two young Californian bands who were going to become flagship bands of the world Thrash metal. These two bands, spearheads of a musical genre that was still in its infancy, were soon joined by Megadeth and Anthrax, forming the Big Four of American Thrash.

With this album, Slayer asserts itself as the most radical band of the genre. The group displays at the time a more provocative visual with a look made of leather and nails. Above all, it expresses a greater violence in the lyrics (the themes of predilection are then death and Satanism) and in the music than their counterparts.

Of course, "Show No Mercy" doesn't equal in brutality the cult "Reign In Blood" that Slayer will release in 1986. But we must admit that this album remains a major record in the band's discography. It is with its successor "Hell Awaits", the album where the two guitarists, creators of the group, multiply the riffs within the same piece and offer us some soli in a style which belongs only to them. As for the singer and bass player, Tom Araya, he also makes his mark with a low voice that perfectly fits the lyrics and the style of the music. It is also the time when he uses frequently, but sparingly, the big high-pitched screams which add a little unhealthy air to the music of the band.

With no less than three timeless tracks ("Antichrist", "Die By The Sword" and "Black Magic"), "Show No Mercy" is obviously a record that every Thrash fan must have. It is certainly not at the level of the albums which will follow and which will benefit from a much better production but it already possesses all the qualities which will make Slayer one of the world and undeniable masters of Thrash metal.
