The first Van Halen is a bit like the first Led Zeppelin, nobody was waiting for it and it was like a bomb when it came out. This album, it is absolutely necessary to put it back in its time to understand its impact. At the end of the 70's, the progressive rock was laminated by the punks, the hard rock is not in very good shape (Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple have already released their best albums) and it is the East Coast of the United States that is on the bill with what will be called later the post punk (Patti Smith, Television, Talking Heads ...)
So for sure, we can imagine the young listener of the time discovering this unknown band from Pasadena (California). First the cover, you can feel that they want it, the postures, the leather, it's going to be powerful to take off your eardrums, then, the first track "Runnin' With The Devil", my god! What's that sound? A guitar? Never heard such a thing, it's monstrous, when you listen to it, it almost sounds like it's talking. And this voice, is it Robert Plant? No, it's more hoarse, more... sexual as well, something to knock the girls out. Then comes "Eruption" with a guitar that not only does talk but laughs too, it becomes really hellish. "You Really Got Me " ? A cover of the Kinks ? Oh yeah but d, the purists must have shouted at the scandal. Wait, it's not over yet, " Ain't Talkin' 'Bout love " (my favorite) keeps on beating hot and cold and " I'm The One " is played at a hundred per hour by an overexcited guitarist (let's call him " guitar-hero ", he deserves it). We calm down a little bit the game with "Jamie's Cryin'" but it's for better stabbing you in the back with "Atomic Punk". Want some more? There's also "Ice Cream Man", a blues/rock'n'roll played from the underworld and "On Fire" that will finish consuming what's left of you.
After that, if you're still standing, either you're deaf or you hate hard rock/blues rock. The first Van Halen is an instant classic, and to say that this is just the beginning of the story...
