After a long absence, Peter Gabriel resurfaced in 2002 with his new album "Up". The creative process was a long and complex one, since work began in 1995, with regular breaks to concentrate on the OVO project, before finally resuming in 2000. As always, Peter Gabriel surrounded himself with a fine team of no less than thirty specialists, from programming to instruments.
From the very first seconds of 'Darkness', the Peter Gabriel sound is clearly recognizable. Evanescent percussion, chunky guitar, piano, husky vocals - it's all there. Further on, it's emotion that triumphs with 'Sky Blue', in which a choir of blind youngsters punctuates the master of the house's own vocals. The sounds intermingle: Hammond organ, synths, electric guitar riffs, drums and vocals. The result is breathtaking. 'Signal to Noise' is a moment of pure emotion. Performed by Pakistani singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, the track builds to a frenzy of strings and vocals. How can an orchestra raise emotions so high?
But Peter Gabriel is also a more mainstream artist. Witness 'Growing up', in which the Gab lets himself explore more basic rhythms, without underestimating his instrumental richness. And above all, 'The Barry Williams show', a hilarious parody of reality TV, in which Peter plays his best role since Rael. Rhythm, bass, great sounds, killer vocals and imagination to spare.
"Up" is quite simply Peter Gabriel's best album since "So", a regal record the likes of which we'd like to hear more often. Because it transcends all references to become a one-of-a-kind record, "Up" is the album to remember for 2002. - Official website Did you know?
According to Peter Gabriel, "Up" was almost called "I/O" (In/Out) because many of the songs were about birth and death. In the end, "I/O" was released, but 21 years later.
'Sky Blue' is the oldest song on the album, dating back to the "Us" recording sessions.
'I Grieve' was performed live on the Larry King Weekend television show to mark the first anniversary of the September 11 attacks in the United States.
The album cover depicts five s of water. Each contains a refracted image of Peter Gabriel's face.
"Up" is built like a journey, with a dark, ominous opening ('Darkness'), an introspective middle section ('Growing Up', 'Sky Blue', 'I Grieve') and an optimistic conclusion ('More Than This').
