Gab’s masterpiece ! If we had to name only one masterpiece, it would be this one. And if it was the album of all the hits of Peter Gabriel, it is also the one of a maturity searched out for almost twenty years and finally reached.

Peter's voice has matured too. Even deeper and more vibrant, but also less tense towards frenzy and less nasal. Fair enough: It is only more adapted to the small revolution that the artist will produce. From now on, there is nothing questionable in his work. The balance between the synths and natural instruments is perfectly reached. Kept to create the magic ambiances of tracks like "Mercy street", the synth leaves place to the extraordinary bass of the great Tony Levin, for stunning solos and riffs which reach their paroxysm in "Don't give up".

This track is by the way the excellent duet of Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush that takes you to the depths of agony and residual hope of a man at the bottom of the abyss and lost in the modern world. With nostalgic bass, vaporous and measured sounds, haunting choruses. Incredible. There is also "Sledgehammer", another track that can be played on the radio. Let's not forget the strength of it. Few songs can move the audience with so much intelligence and mischief. And the seventies reminiscences come back to the surface in this tribute to Otis Redding, of whom Peter was a fan in his childhood. Let's mention again "Red Rain", where Peter takes us instantly into his universe, which is both clear as civilization and dark as the underlying barbarism of our world. Finally, let's come to "Mercy street". Emotion, warmth, loss of landmarks and nostalgia.

It is perhaps this last word that emerges most from "So" today. Although it was (and still is) an avant-garde record, it sounds like an incredible nostalgia of a past already gone and not so far away. An album whose resources are so great that we haven't finished exploring them.

MR BUNGLE: California (1999)
PROGRESSIVE ROCK - Mr. Bungle is the new avatar of Mike Patton, the outstanding singer and performer of Faith No More, and California is his most delirious and hallucinated side.
PETER GABRIEL: Up (2002)
PROGRESSIVE ROCK - "Up" is Peter Gabriel's best album since "So", a regal record the likes of which we'd like to hear more often.
