With this album, A.C.T. once again affirms its aspiration to occupy the niche of original and completely disconnected progressive music. This attitude is not questionable in itself but it is advisable to be warned before buying this album: if you are looking for square music, without surprise, not deviating from a well-defined style, then go your way, Last Epic is not made for you.
Indeed, even if the general spirit of the compositions is progressive, even metal in some aspects, we will also remember from a first listening the passages related more to waltz, reggae and song.... That said, these 5 musicians are Swedish and it is clear that this type of delirium is typical of bands from Sweden, such as Flower Kings or Isildurs Bane, to name a few.
Whether we like this original side or not, the fact remains that A.C.T.'s compositions are undeniably of very good quality, on all points. Each piece is based on an unstoppable melody around which breaks and solos are articulated, performed with passion and total technical mastery. Thus, it is obvious that tracks such as 'Mr. Landlord' will make you want to play the album over and over again on your turntable and that the 'Ted's Ballad', which may seem a little too easy at first, remains a remarkable track for the richness of its orchestration.
Technically, the whole is very honourable, especially on the guitar and drum parts. Listen carefully to these two musicians and you will easily deduce their main inspirations: John Petrucci and Mike Portnoy. They certainly don't have the level, but they are definitely getting closer.
The only shadow on the picture is the voice. The singer is in place but he lacks power. Fortunately, the choirs provided by the keyboard and the guitarist are a good support, but to such an extent that sometimes we would like the vocals to be totally provided by one of the other two.
Listen in particular to the song 'Wake Up' and you will find that the official singer is not necessarily the one with the best voice. It's certainly a pity, but we can hope that as the albums go by, this little flaw will eventually disappear. - Official website
