After leaving Angra and Shamaan, Andre Matos is back in 2007 under his own name. To realize this "Time to be free" he enlisted the services of the Mariutti brothers, who also leaved from Shaaman, Sacha Paeth and Roy Z at the controls.
Even before listening to this album, its track may surprise. Did André Matos feel trapped in the groups to which he belonged? Couldn't he let his inspiration run wild? Did he play the provocation card? We will not discuss this choice, which seems somewhat inappropriate for us to focus on the main thing, namely music.
With this "Time to be free", Matos is no exception to some of his good habits. The writing and production work is meticulous and the general musical style of the album is directly in line with what the man was able to do in his former bands. The twelve tracks are based on a heavy melodic metal full of various influences, from classic to Brazilian touches, characteristics that have made Matos' career so charming and original. And the quality is there!
From the beginning of the album, Matos gratifies us with a small heavy metal pearl with a symphonic tendency worthy of the "Angel's cry" era followed by the melodic title "Rio" of a very good level. And the first part of the album is in line with this, with "Remember why" in particular, which is closer to what the current Angra can do.
After a very heavy "How long" in which Hugo Mariutti shows his know-how on totally mastered soli, some weaker tracks appear, including the two ballads "Looking back" and "Face the end" a little too classical and which break a little the rhythm of the album.
Fortunately "Time to be free" relaunches the album with its epic aspect and orchestrations, an excellent very progressive track in its construction and one of the highlights of the album. We should also not forget "Rescue", a heavier, almost progressive track with its vocals on the edge of black metal and a very pronounced Brazilian ethnic aspect, nor the floydian "New Moonlight", a new version of a track by Viper (André Matos' first group) whose piano accompanies Matos on vocals in its last part. We will travel with great pleasure on this superb piece whose finale mixes guitar and orchestrations. The album finally ends with more classical tracks, very heavy melodic but of good quality.
André Matos and his band sign a very convincing and rich album that will undoubtedly delight fans of heavy melodic music. Leaving aside the experimentations and the dark side of "Reason" (Shaman) to return to the best he can do, Matos has given himself every chance to get back to the top of the bill. - Official website
