DT's 4th work, "A Change of Season" is not an album like any other. It contains tracks that were recorded in the 1990s at a sold-out concert in honour of their fans.

Located between studio and live quality, it contains only 5 tracks, the first two of which are original and the next 3, medleys of different known songs from different musical horizons. If the interest of the covers allowing to admire the ease of the musicians to play anything is very quickly limited, the same cannot be said for the first two original tracks, each one lasting a little more than 20 minutes. Because it is a real demonstration that the American team offers us.

Technically, there's nothing wrong to say. The changes in rhythms and phrasing follow one another at a frantic pace and it will take a good number of listenings before you remember all the sequences that make up the piece. Rough progressive passages and melodies, the secret of which only DT seems to possess, alternate with disconcerting ease, leading the listener into a whirlwind of different atmospheres, more or less catchy. Omnipresent keyboards with extremely varied sounds, endless soli performed to perfection, a very strong imperial drum set, a smooth vocals will make you live twice 20 minutes absolutely exceptional.

Once again, DT will have proven that it remains an essential band in the progressive metal world, whatever the year. "A Change of Season" will suit both the fan and the beginner even if this album is not one of the most famous.

OTHER REVIEWS
DREAM THEATER: Awake (1994)
PROGRESSIVE METAL - As usual, Dream Theater evolves smoothly, not completely cutting off its previous production while adding enough elements to renew itself.
DREAM THEATER: Falling Into Infinity (1997)
PROGRESSIVE METAL - Despite its commercial label, "Falling Into Infinity" is an excellent album and once again presents DT in a new light, more rock, more open, more accessible.
