Just one year after a mitigated "Physicist" who hadn't convinced because of a loss of identity of his personal project, the prodigal Devin Townsend comes back to us with a much more identifiable and undeniably progressive opus! And as an exception to the imposed rule, we will describe "Terria" in its entirety.
After a minimalist "Olive" intro which gradually rises in an explosive apotheosis as the master likes them, a short death scream opens the monumental "Moutain" and its extraordinary atmospheric break on which the harmonies, notably vocal ones, have the beautiful part... Then follows the gigantic "Earth Day" with its melodious refrain in paradox with nervous screams...
What can we say about "Deep Peace", with its fine acoustic guitar opening part and the multitude of filigree atmospheres? Sublime! Just like the long and subtle guitar solo that rises crescendo and shows the Canadian's sensitivity... "Down And Under" begins with an acoustic guitar with cicada songs in the background that once again rises crescendo. If the recipe has already been used many times, the result for the listener is always the same: we are conquered!
"The Fluke" is much more direct and incisive with its sharp riff to get back on the saddle and the next three tracks like the slow "Nobody's Here", "Tiny Tears" and "Stagnant" although successful remain dispensable as well as the hidden track even if it's quite amusing to see the Canadian trying his hand at the country genre!
For this 4th opus under the Devin Townsend label, the Canadian favours the recipe that made the success of "Biomech", namely a progressive atmospheric metal with calm atmospheres that will take you into a fairy-tale world. Even if at the end, the concept runs out of steam making "Terria" less compact than its elder, it remains an essential part of the Canadian's discography but also of any self-respecting metal discography! - Official website
