"Riverside closes its trilogy with this "Rapid Eye Movement", an album full of qualities worthy of the previous productions."

The problem with bands that have made a strong impression with their first album(s) is that the listener of the following opuses tries to find the same strong emotions. Take for instance "Rapid Eye Movement", Riverside's last album: this band had really stunned us when "Out of Myself" was released. Once the surprise effect was over, the listeners were slightly disappointed with "Second Life Syndrome", an excellent album. With "Rapid Eye Movement", the combo closes its trilogy, by confusing a little more its audience. The first listening seems to reveal less scope than before, and the rise in power is less obvious.

And yet... the successive listenings reveal an album full of qualities, notably an obvious research on the arrangements, the small sound details which add plans to the already rich sonorous universe of Riverside. How not to be amazed, in "Beyond The Eyelids", at the entrance of the vocal section, in front of the work of the keyboards which come to be integrated into the rhythmic section, or the carefully distorted bass on "Panic Room"; How not to applaud the intelligence of the work on the guitar in "Rainbow Box", a title whose atmosphere reminds furiously of Porcupine Tree, or still the small tricks of percussion with the double pedal at the beginning of "Ultimate Trip"... And if you look at it, the power rises are always there (on a calm register as in "Schizophrenic Prayer", or in a more classic register for the band in "Parasomnia", very successful). To note also some incursions in a rather unexpected quasi-atmospheric register ("Embryonic").

And what would Riverside be without his bassist-singer-composer Mariusz Duda? Always in great shape vocally (although less demonstrative than in the previous album), he performs as always a perfect performance: the right effect, at the right time, served by this warm timbre which knows how to be furious when it is necessary.

In the end, this "Rapid Eye Movement" keeps the quality that we know from Riverside. It will be interesting to see what the band will produce on the next album.
