A young American band, Abigail's Ghost play a Progressive Rock very influenced by Porcupine Tree and "Selling Insincerity", their very first album released in March 2007, proves to be very promising.
As said previously, the band is almost a clone of Porcupine Tree without having a clean and true soul. The songs are inspired by the English band both in structure and in sound or even voice! The singer, Joshua Theriot, has a subtly melodious and emotional voice, but totally pumped into Steven Wilson's voice. By the way, even the interface of the Abigail's Ghost site is copied from that of Porcupine Tree ! This shows how much they take them as an example...
However, you shouldn't spit on this competent and talented young band, because wanting to imitate Porcupine Tree is one thing, but getting there is another! And one could almost say that Abigail's Ghost has achieved its goals. Indeed, some tracks manage to release the same indescribable emotion, tinged with aggressiveness and tenderness, characteristic of Porcupine Tree... The tracks oscillate between soft passages on the clean guitar covered with piano and other more aggressive moments, where the saturated guitar drowns in instrumental flights both tortured and exciting... This is the case of "Dead People's Review", a title that irrevocably recalls "Blackest Eyes" by Porcupine Tree, or "Sellout".
Nor should we believe that all the titles of "Selling Insincerity" are just a copy of Porcupine Tree. Some tracks are indeed endowed with a real originality, while remaining in this style specific to the album. This is the case of "Love Sounds" or "Monochrome", musics that show the true face of these Americans, and not the simple reflection of another band...
The production is impeccable, the compositions are well crafted, the melodies are as effective as they are harmonious, and the musicians are technically perfect! In the end,Abigail's Ghost can be said to be to Porcupine Tree what Dreamscape is to Dream Theater... Despite its lack of originality, "Selling Insincerity" is not without interest and will please both Porcupine Tree fans and fans of effective and melodious Progressive Rock. - Official website
