Since its inception, Esthesis has moved forward at a measured pace, seeking a delicate balance between emotion and rigor, shadow and light. Three years after "Watching Worlds Collide", the band returns with "Out of Step", a more organic, more contrasting album, where every sound seems guided by the need to say something true. Here, everything seems more embodied, more direct, almost instinctive. The title says it all: being “out of step” is undoubtedly the only way to move forward when everything around you is faltering.
From 'Connection' onwards, the tone is set. The track opens with precise drums, soon joined by a full, enveloping bass that imposes a tense but fluid rhythm. The rhythm section plays a central role – providing both anchorage and tension – while the keyboards breathe more freely, creating a space where the melody settles naturally. This organic foundation runs through the entire album, like an underground pulse. The guitars, more abrasive than in the past, blend into a subtle balance between tension and softness. Esthesis now favors sensation over demonstration, raw emotion over complexity.
Less demonstrative than “Watching Worlds Collide,” “Out of Step” is paradoxically richer in terms of emotions. The interludes 'Fractured I & II' offer ambient breathing spaces that connect the tracks like fragments of consciousness. 'City Lights' evokes a luminous, almost urban escape, between trip-hop and atmospheric pop, while 'The Frame' conveys the desire to break out of the mold, to break with certainties, between melancholy and contained liberation. And when the title track resounds, the dynamic changes: a nervous bass, reminiscent of Sade or Prince, leads the band into an unexpected groove. More direct, more lively, ‘Out of Step’ symbolizes the best of the band - mastery of rhythm, clarity of sound (the alarm that sounds and the silence it imposes) and an emotional tension that never lets go.
The second half of the album gains dramatic intensity with 'Circus' and 'The Storm'. Mathilde Collet's voice, now fully integrated, breathes new life into the album: ethereal and powerful at the same time, it dialogues with Aurélien Goude's in a beautifully accurate echo (reminiscent of the heyday of Portishead's trip hop). 'The Storm' is the climax: a long crescendo where the storm becomes purification, carried by a full rhythm section and guitars with almost post-rock textures. The accumulated tension finds its outlet here in an explosion of sounds and emotions, before falling back into a fragile calm. Then comes ‘Abyss’, a bonus instrumental piece composed by the whole band. More than just an epilogue, it acts as a collective breath—a slow ebb after the surge. Between ambient and post-rock, this last track closes the album with an almost meditative serenity, like the silence after the storm.
With “Out of Step,” Esthesis has created an album that is both coherent and daring, where every detail seems designed to serve the fluidity of the whole. Even deeper than “The Awakening,” more visceral than “Watching Worlds Collide,” it captures a moment of truth: that of a band that has reached full artistic maturity, aware of its quiet strength. Between progressive rock, ambient, groove, and modern post-rock, Esthesis pursues a unique trajectory, far from passing fads, in a delicate balance between rigor and emotion. “Out of Step” is not just a step aside: it is an affirmation, an anchoring of a band that moves forward, lucid and inspired, without ever repeating itself.
