We've been longing for the eerie alleys of Dumptown. Hyperdump hit the mark with “The Weak Man” and its mephitic metal punctuated with moments of epic grace. Eight years later, fans can finally enjoy a successor to this landmark album, which set the bar pretty high.

“Weird Stories From Dumptown” takes a step back to observe a city teeming with extravagant characters reminiscent of the world of Midian in Clive Barker's “Cabal.” The sound is as foul as ever (the cathedral-like introduction to “Until Death”). The guitars take on the appearance of spinning guillotines, threateningly hovering above our heads. And when they get a chance to break free, we are rarely disappointed ('A Betrayed Woman', 'Fuck You'). The rhythm section contributes to the erection of this wall of sound, thanks in particular to the drummer's high-energy playing. The band has conducted a real melodic exploration, which results in a few unifying choruses. 'The Fan', performed with David Potvin, is one of the album's great successes with its dizzying guitar riff, epileptic keyboards, and vocals that range from furious growls to seduction.

It doesn't take much to open new doors (the prog-like finale of ‘The Dark Secrets’, ‘Pimple Junkie Boys’ and its industrial accents). However, there is a lack of a perfect counterpoint, a track that would allow you to take a breath of fresh air before diving back under the water, for example, an instrumental or a dark waltz. In this respect, ‘Everybody Knows’ ends a little too abruptly.

Hyperdump can boast of having an accomplished vocalist in WS. The former disciple of Mike Patton has now completely freed himself from these nasal influences (‘Pimple Junkie Boy’ is a sign of this) and tends to be more confident, particularly on the clean vocal parts (‘And We All Die At The End’, on which WS invites the specter of Jaz Coleman, and ‘The Preacher’, on which he transforms himself into Jim Jones). The short listening time (just over 35 minutes) shows that the band has chosen to focus on the essentials by polishing their work.

Like Shaârghot in the industrial field, Hyperdump is carried by its inventive concept and its musical black diamond. This new opus is more compact than its predecessor, and the band has everything it needs to continue its rise. Ws, don't make us wait another eight years!
