"GrandRapide finally releases a follow-up to their first EP, recorded in 2016. “II” is convincing, picking up where the Rennes band left off: with noise and fury!"

Formed in 2011, the french stoner rock band GrandRapide released a promising EP in 2016, expressing raw rage over high-energy rhythms. From the dynamic “Kat” to the bleeding riffs of “Face à Face,” the sinister “You Will Be Mine” to the instrumental “Godzilla,” there was plenty to get excited about. Strangely, GrandRapide then disappeared from the radar. 2025 sees the return of a true comeback kid with a second EP soberly titled “II.”

The 2025 version of GrandRapide picks up where it left off nine years earlier. The drum rolls give us a taste of the intoxication of desert depths, the guitar is sharp, and the vocals, effective in both English and French, are sometimes horribly (that's a compliment!) distorted. This first track, entitled “Against The World,” serves as both a calling card and proof that GrandRapide has lost none of its splendor. The band is as convincing as ever when it comes to instrumentals, with “GrandRapide” being the most striking example.

The album rolls along and the sharp, almost metallic guitar riffs seem to want to cut us into little pieces. This violence is sometimes tempered by the drummer. While he has a light touch, his use of the cymbals allows him to bring some welcome subtlety. The 23-minute EP with seven tracks runs along the same razor's edge and would have benefited from a few refreshing surprises. The care taken with the lyrics is also noteworthy, drawing on a dark vein, and behind the extravagant fury of ‘Burn Out’ lies a fairly accurate social critique.

GrandRapide has finally released a follow-up to its first EP, recorded in 2016. “II” is convincing, picking up where “Grandrapide” left off in the noise and fury of a locomotive racing at full speed on rusty rails. This EP is neither the most subtle nor the most original, but it knows how to be enjoyable, and music lovers of all stripes will be delighted with this ride on the speeding train. Let's hope that GrandRapide soon shifts into high gear with a full-length album!

POST ROCK - Although too soft, like its predecessors, “Instant Rewards” is objectively a very good vintage, where Tides From Nebula has given free rein to its desires.

ALTERNATIVE ROCK - YUNGBLUD shakes up his pop-punk universe on ‘Idols’ and unveils an album that is as vast as it is unexpected. A resounding success.
