"Volbeat really didn't put much effort into “God of Angels Trust,” which won't leave a lasting impression."

Three weeks of writing and thirteen days of recording—that's all it took Volbeat to produce “God of Angels Trust.” After Rob Caggiano left in 2023, the band became a trio and wanted to “abandon all the rules of composition and break with convention to explore new creative ways” on this new album. Is this a subtle way for Volbeat to announce a lack of motivation, or on the contrary, renewed inspiration?
The band seems to have heard the criticism of “Servant of the Mind,” which praised a first part based on 1990s heavy/thrash metal. Fans of big, fat, heavy riffs set to binary rhythmic structures will be delighted when listening to “Devils are Awake,” “By A Monster's Hand,” “Demonic Depression,” and “Better Be Fueled Than Tamed,” all of which have one or more passages that are unmistakably reminiscent of Metallica.
Unfortunately, they haven't corrected the numerous bland tracks that weighed down the second half of “Servant of the Mind” and flood this “God of Angels Trust.” With a pop and mainstream approach, “Acid Rain,” 'Lonely Fields' and, to a lesser extent, ‘Time Will Heal’ are far too conventional to make an impression, while ‘At The End Of The Sirens’ and ‘Devils Are Awake’ sound like they've been heard a thousand times before. As for the slightly more original tracks such as ‘In The Barn Of The Goat’ and ‘At The End Of The Sirens’, seem to have been created without a clear direction, the former starting off with rockabilly and Poulsen mimicking Elvis Presley before falling back into basic heavy metal, and the latter stringing together disjointed sections that make it rather uncomfortable to listen to.
With such a short composition period, we shouldn't have expected miracles, and from that point of view, there are no surprises. Volbeat clearly didn't put much effort into “God of Angels Trust,” and it shows from start to finish. Let's hope this is just a slight dip in form for a band that has accustomed us to much better. - Official website
