"Somewhere between AC/DC, Def Leppard and Alice Cooper, "Evil World Machine" places Crossbone Skully among the most exciting hard-rock bands with no creative limits."

Crossbone Skully is the brainchild of Tommy Henriksen, guitarist, bassist and songwriter for Alice Cooper and Hollywood Vampires. And he's got his address book warmed up, having managed to get John "Mutt" Lang out of retirement to produce this opus with the help of Tommy Denander (Radioactive, A.O.R.). Guests also include Phil Collen (Def Leppard) and Nikki Sixx (Mötley Crüe), who each contribute one track. Last but not least, Johnny Depp, Alice Cooper, Joe Perry and Kane Roberts, among others, play the roles of the characters in this space fable with a metal "Ziggy Stardust" feel.

This story of an extraterrestrial rock'n'roll hero returning to Earth to reunite with his family and save the planet from a sorcerer wishing to drain the world of its life force and plunge Mankind into darkness with the help of an "Evil World Machine" unfolds in thirteen parts. Each track in turn conjures up the shadows of AC/DC, Def Leppard, Airbourne and Alice Cooper, as well as Dropkick Murphys (‘Let's Bust The Trust’) and Pink Floyd (‘I Am The Wolf’), for a captivating result from start to finish. But if the quintet play with a few winks, such as the notes borrowed from the riff of ‘Big Gun’ (AC/DC) on the anthemic ‘Everyone's On Dope’, it's really, and only, a question of shadows blending into a whole. It's also worth noting that the adventures of our E.T. on amphetamines evolve from straightforward, effective hard-rock opening tracks from the Australian legends, to pieces whose ambience and choruses recall the work of Sheffield's Def Leppard.

It's true that the Young brothers and Joe Elliott's gang share more than legendary collaborations with John ‘Mutt’ Lange, which tends to bring things full circle. Every track here is endowed with unstoppable choruses that latch onto the listener's neurons for days, while Tommy Henriksen demonstrates top-notch vocal skills. Inventive and sometimes inhabited, he brings his character to life, making his adventures all the more exciting. Sometimes boastful like a reincarnation of Bon Scott (‘Money, Sex Or God’, ‘Flip The Bird’), he can also be disquieting on the darker ‘The Sin Eater’ and ‘I Am The Wolf’. He even uses a surprising vocal application to make his voice more electronic (‘The Sin Eater’, ‘Misfits Of The Universe’).

Enveloped by a flawless production that reminds us that Mutt is not a studio legend for nothing, this "Evil World Machine" is a work as unexpected as it is captivating and astonishing. Crossbone Skully and his mastermind have come up with a landmark opus that all lovers of rock in the broadest sense of the term owe it to themselves to discover. Combining the unstoppable efficiency of AC/DC, the melodic elegance of Def Leppard and the inventive theatricality of Alice Cooper, Tommy Henriksen now has to confirm this stroke of genius with eagerly awaited new adventures.

HARD ROCK - “Dreams On Toast” isn't the best The Darkness has produced to date, but it does have a few assets to attract a fairly wide audience.
