More than 30 years after its debut, Cradle Of Filth has lost none of its bite. The British band has overcome fashions and crises to rediscover a high level of creativity. “Existence Is Futile” was an exquisite offering, a delicate blend of venomous charm and brutality. Its successor, “The Screaming Of The Valkyries”, is a nine-stage journey into a romantic, decadent world.

The first act sees Cradle Of Filth bring brutality to the fore: 'To Live Deliciously' and 'Ex Sanguine Draculae' are ultra-fast and glue you to your seat. Dani howls like a damned man to form a savage black metal ensemble, particularly in the blistering solos. Cleverly, a calmer tone emerges through the flamboyantly melancholic breaks.

The second act consists of 'Demagoguery', 'The Trinity Of Shadows', 'You Are My Nautilus' and 'When Misery Was A Stranger'. Violence mixes with gothic, with the piano providing a welcome romantic edge. Dani alternates between howling and deep, whispered vocals. The whole thing is grandiloquent, decadent and deliciously bewitching, like an invitation to the deepest darkness of the human soul.

The final act kicks off with a calmer, more romantic 'No Omnis Moriar', a seductive hit with delicate piano and carried by the vocal duo of Dani and Zoé. They sublimate a marvel of catchy gothic metal. White Hellebore' and 'Malignant Perfection' are in the same melancholy spirit. Zoé's powerful yet fragile tone shines through, and we can't help but appreciate the melodic guitar and piano work.

With “The Screaming Of The Valkyries”, Cradle of Filth has produced a remarkable album in the form of an emotional whirlwind. Somewhere between gothic, romantic and extreme metal, the band shows itself to be at the peak of its art, and in a world in perdition, it makes you want to join it in a dark shadow that has become a saving refuge.
