With “Anesthetic” in 2019, Mark Morton showed that he was much more than just a metal guitarist. The Lamb Of God lead guitarist had signed a fresh and varied record that saw him venture into rock territory. Given the talent on display, a follow-up was inevitable: it's called “Without The Pain” and confirms Mark's desire to vary pleasures by delving into America's musical roots.
To achieve this, Mark Morton has surrounded himself with the best in the genre. Brother' and ‘Dust’, with guests Cody Links and Grace Bowers, mix blues and country. They express a sweetly Southern feel with charming, hoarse vocals. Solos by prodigy Grace Bowers are stunning, with a sensitivity worthy of an old hand. 'Kite String' and ‘Home’ with Travis Denning are totally country, in the form of warm, melancholy storytelling carried by the acoustic guitar.
The Southern fiber is also represented: ‘Hell & Back’, ‘Whitout The Pain’, ‘Come December’ and ‘Forever In The Light’ are full of charm, with deep bass vocals, fabulous melodies and solos dripping with sensitivity. Here, too, the guests shine, with Charlie Starr of Blackberry Smoke, Jaren Johnston and Tyler Bryant adding extra soul. On “The Needle And The Spoon”, Mark Morton, accompanied by Neil Fallon of Clutch, pays sincere and touching tribute to Lynyrd Skynyrd.
With “Whitout The Pain”, Mark Morton pays tribute to the heart of American music. Perfectly surrounded, he does it with great sincerity and signs an excellent, personal and endearing record.
