Launched in 2019 with “Divination”, the “Reader Of The Runes” trilogy has enabled Italy's Elvenking to confirm their talent for fresh, direct, folk-tinged melodic heavy metal. The latest instalment, “Luna”, boasts a cover as superb as the previous ones, bringing an adventure aspect ideal for setting the mood.
Like its big brothers, the record emphasizes the melodic folk metal spirit. 'Season Of The Owl', ‘Gone Epoch’, ‘Starbath’ and ‘The Weeping’ provide excellent moments, alternating between calm and fast passages. The hoarse vocals are pleasing, with an engaging storytelling quality. The choruses are effective, with an epic folk tone tinged with a cinematic aspect worthy of Rhapsody.
With ‘Stormcarrier’, ‘On These Haunted Shores’ and ‘Throes Of Atonement’, the speed metal side takes over. We find the spirit of Blind Guardian again, with superb clear vocals and a chivalrous side carried by perfect melodies and unstoppable folk solos. 'Luna' and ‘The Ghosting’ are two effective singles with irresistible catchy melodies and unifying choruses.
'Readers Of The Runes - Book II' is the ideal conclusion to the album and trilogy in a remarkable synthesis. The track exudes enormous epic force, alternating between calm, theatrical passages and speedy acceleration. The folk facet is pleasant, with a catchy and beautiful break. The instrumental part is splendid, in the form of a melodic whirlwind, all of which makes this track a total must-have.
This final instalment in the trilogy is an admirable success. With “Luna”, Elvenking concludes his saga in the best possible way. His fresh, enjoyable opus is a perfect celebration of melodic speed folk. - Official website
