Whitechapel are back for another round of music that will leave us with wounds and bumps. The band had left us with a hard-hitting and varied record (“Kin”), hailed by critics and fans alike. The Americans had used the services of a session drummer (Alex Rüdinger), whereas for “Hymns Of Dissonance” they integrated Brandon Zackey, already present live. “Hymns In Dissonance” is an aural surge of frightening vibrations, with an unequivocal message on the cover: the album will be a butchery, a plunge into a sweaty, bloody abyss.
The album's violence and uncompromising tracks take it to the next level. The drums are percussive, often in mid-tempo, the belched vocals are sonic vomit, the riffs are bleeding and the solo parts, heir to Morbid Angel, are sometimes at the limit of the bearable ('Hate Cult Ritual' or 'The Abysmal Gospel'). In the midst of this shadowy landscape, diffuse tracks emerge to heighten the sense of unease ('Ex Infernis'). Whitechapel's art is to leave a hint of doubt as to what might happen around the corner of a deceptively peaceful measure... Anguish and fear permeate the record's interstices, from leaden riffs to ethereal, industrial post-apocalyptic passages. The cursor of violence is pushed to its maximum, so much so that it's impossible to leave this sonic treacle unscathed. Whitechapel displays a consistency of horror that surprises and suffocates. Although the last track is full of melody, it ends with a feeling of great despair and deep disillusionment ('Nothing I Coming For Any Of Us')... a feeling that ultimately hangs over the whole record.
“Hymns Of Dissonance” is a record whose tracks are fuelled by terror. Intense and violent, it is experienced as an ordeal that leaves its mark. There are few melodies to be found, and even if there are, they are so discordant that they send a chill down the spine. This suffocating album, difficult to listen to, is a good vintage that offers its share of contrasting emotions. - Official website
