LORDI: Limited Deadition (HEAVY METAL): review / opinion to read on Music Waves

Apart from its members' disguises, Lordi has another special feature: it almost always brings us a surprise with each new album, without leaving us feeling out of place. Of course, there are markers you can't escape, such as Mr. Lordi's gravelly voice, a keen sense of melody and catchy chorus, and puns reminiscent of the world of horror films. But if the Finnish quintet doesn't always push its creativity as far as it did with its “Lordiversity” box set, it nevertheless almost always manages to slip enough elements into its new discographic releases to avoid a feeling of redundancy.

With the singer's passion for collections as a common thread, “Limited Deadition” is no exception. This nineteenth opus in twenty-three years confirms Kone's position as guitarist who likes to offer us out velocity solos. He's clearly a first-class shredder behind the mummy's disguise, and each of his interventions is a real plus for the new compositions. Hella is the other member of the band who comes into his own here. Keyboards reign supreme on the eleven new tracks and five traditional interludes. They are both the foundations and the facings of pieces with a strong 1980s vibe.

On the menu of this delivery from the Rovaniemi monsters, we'll note the piano melody reminiscent of the Halloween movie theme on 'Legends Are Made Of Clichés', the heavy metal of 'Syntax Terror' oscillating between Accept and the Judas Priest of the “Turbo” period, or the power-metal riff of 'Killharmonic Orchestra'. It's also hard to miss the astonishing ballad 'Collectable', as moving and sensitive as it is endearingly naive. As for 'Fangoria', with its snoring bass and hypnotic synths, the unifying anthem 'Hellizabeth', or the heavy-synthesizer of the eponymous track with its hammered, haunting chorus, they'll be burned into your mind in less time than it takes to write here.

Once again, Lordi unleashes an unstoppable opus, once again succeeding in offering fans what they've come to expect without lapsing into redundancy. Every track on “Limited Deadition” benefits from top-notch production, a catchy sense of melody and unstoppable choruses. If Mr. Lordi has so far succeeded in wearing out many musicians, this is not the case for fans of his band, for whom he provides an escape from the prevailing gloom with albums that combine a sense of mockery with good humor. - Official website
