After an absence of more than a decade, coinciding with the departure of their lead singer Christopher Barretto - best known for having been the original singer of Periphery - who left to join Monuments, Ever Forthright make a masterful comeback with “Techinflux” and a new frontman in the person of Mike Semesky (Raunchy, ex-Intervals and The HAARP Machine). This new album, rich in technical complexity and artistic daring, is a fascinating, almost flawless work of overflowing ambition.
Opener 'Kickfun' is a real tour de force. This track, with its powerful riffs and syncopated rhythms, lays the foundations for the album. Obvious influences from bands like Periphery and TesseracT are evident, with a jazzy touch reminiscent of Animals as Leaders. The rich, virtuosic instrumental passages are captivating from the outset, and Mike Semesky's performance, combining massive growls and clear vocal lines, is on the mark.
The following tracks, 'Tambora' and 'Rancho Cucamonga', display inventive songwriting in which the band explores striking dynamic contrasts. The transitions between heavy and jazzy sections are executed with remarkable fluidity, testifying to the band's artistic maturity. Ever Forthright's instrumental mastery is undeniable, with complex rhythmic signatures and breathtaking guitar solos, notably on 'Cryptoface', reminding the great moments of Textures or Dream Theater. This technical virtuosity is perfectly balanced, serving emotion without ever supplanting it, allowing the tracks to breathe and the listener to become fully immersed.
'Drop it like Harambe' takes an experimental approach, incorporating electronic elements and textures close to The Contortionist. This track stands out for its boldness and fits harmoniously into the album as a whole, contributing to a solid overall cohesion. This patchwork of brilliant ideas forms a homogeneous whole, reinforcing the band's sonic identity.
“Techinflux” is an album where technique dazzles and emotion transcends. For fans of rich, demanding musical experiences, this is an album not to be missed. The moments of genius far outweigh the slight flaws, making this work a masterpiece of modern progressive metal.
