In 2022, a Serbian band emerged from nowhere to release their debut, "The First Bite". Despite a very academic hard FM sound, The Big Deal created quite a buzz. The video for 'Never Say Never' was the most-watched on Frontiers' Youtube channel, the opus entered the top ten sales on Amazon in the British Metal category, and the band shared a Spanish stage with Europe and Deep Purple. Today sees the release of "Electrified", awaited with fearful curiosity.

The departure of Alessandro Del Vecchio on bass and the arrival of a songwriting duo at the helm - Anders Wikstrom (TREAT) and Jona Tee (H.E.A.T.) - are of fundamental importance here. Indeed, apart from two tracks that would have deserved a place on the band's first album (or even to remain in the drawers), the ten remaining tracks this time hold up well. The usual hard rock melodies have taken on a more metal edge, the appearance of a few symphonic and power metal strains allows for a more varied approach, and above all, the melodies have abandoned their guilty ease of yesteryear.

Of course, the synth solos are still kitsch, and the vocal duet sometimes exudes harmonies reminiscent of Abba. But the discerning hard rocker will probably be able to get over the hurdle and appreciate the object, even if he may occasionally be bothered by drums mixed too far forward. Nonetheless, the opus offers its share of catchy compositions, with structures that are sufficiently complex - with layers of keyboards and guitars galore - not to wear out on the first listen. This aural journey crosses paths with Beast In Black on the pop-inflected 'Better Than Hell', Amaranthe on 'Don't Talk About Love', and Nightwish on the excellent 'Fairy Of White'. Passing from heavy to power metal, then from hard melody to symphonic metal, the listener finds his share of diversified sensations.

Even if there's still room for emancipation, and a few flaws to be ironed out, The Big Deal can boast undeniable progress on this “Electrified”. There's certainly a place to be taken in the female-fronted melodic metal fold for a crew featuring two frontwomen who seem as committed as they are charming.

BEARDFISH: Songs For Beating Hearts (2024)
PROGRESSIVE ROCK - Bearfish reforms and offers a fine progressive rock album with all the ingredients of the genre. It's beautiful, but lacks a touch of originality to make it memorable.
MARCUS KING: Mood Swings (2024)
BLUES - With “Mood Swings”, Marcus King exposes his inner demons, trading in his guitar talent for a collection of desperately depressive soul tracks.
