In anticipation of their comeback with a new album scheduled for 2025, Coheed and Cambria offer us an intimate and unexpected interlude with a covers EP entitled “Claudio Covers”. In this often perilous exercise, where reinterpretation can either crush under the weight of the original, or lack relief, the band opts for a minimalist, sincere approach: acoustic covers that transform well-known standards into moments of closeness with the listener.
The choice of songs reflects the band's characteristic boldness and open-mindedness. From The Cure's 'Just Like Heaven' to Taylor Swift's 'Welcome to New York', via The Outfield's 'Your Love' and The Smiths' 'There Is a Light That Never Goes Out', the EP explores a variety of worlds, with one constant: the desire to redefine the emotion of the tracks through a mostly acoustic prism.
From the very first notes of 'Just Like Heaven', the magic happens: the stripped-down version gains an airy lightness and luminous clarity that instantly captivate. Your Love' takes an introspective, romantic turn, with a slowed-down tempo and an almost androgynous voice that amplifies its melancholy. Coheed and Cambria manage to infuse these tracks with a fresh identity while respecting their essence. But the real tour de force of this EP lies in its ability to surprise. The Church's 'Under the Milky Way', originally acoustic, takes on a more electric dimension, reversing roles and exploring new contrasts. Conversely, 'Stumbleine' by the Smashing Pumpkins remains faithful to its original ambience, almost like a respectful tribute. As for Night Ranger's 'Sister Christian', the acoustic approach is distinguished by nuances of guitar playing reminiscent of Jon Gomm's innovative techniques, adding an unexpected touch.
Beyond the technical aspects and arrangement choices, “Claudio Covers” shines for its authenticity. The acoustic format invites the listener into an almost tactile experience, like an evening by the fire, where each track tells a story both familiar and reinvented. The EP, unpretentious but imbued with profound mastery, is a pleasant appetizer before the band's long-awaited return in 2025. If covers are sometimes a trap, Coheed and Cambria have succeeded here in a balancing act: revisiting without betraying, innovating without distorting. - Official website
