17 years. It had been 17 years since Everon had released a new album, since 2008's “North” to be precise. Although frontman Oliver Philipps never officially declared the band's definitive demise, the lack of an on the official website didn't bode well for the future, and many of us had drawn the line at a potential comeback for the band that had been a staple of a bygone era. Defying all predictions, Everon's new opus, “Shells”, has just appeared in the year 2025, rekindling the flame of old fans of a style they almost created. The band returns in its entirety, with the exception of their original drummer, Moschus, who passed away during the recording, but is featured on 8 tracks.
Fans can rest assured, Oliver Philipps' inspiration and compositional methods have not changed one iota. In fact, the differences between their works of twenty years ago and this one are so minimal, it's astonishing. True to form, Everon likes to occupy the entire sound space, multiplying the layers of instruments even if it means verging on indigestion, given the uncommon breadth of his music. We find Oliver Philipps' famous neutral vocal lines, beautiful harmonies bordering on the pompous, and guitar solos as numerous and successful as ever. With the exception of the occasional guest appearance by Helena Iren Michaelsen on a few tracks including ‘Broken Angel’ and the surprisingly heavy break with a fleeting use of growl on ‘Shells’, there's nothing to disrupt a well-honed creative process begun 30 years ago.
Despite the years, Everon still makes Everon. Discovering the band via “Shells” could be an enriching experience, and bring a few surprises, so singular is the compositional work. As for those who already felt that the band was repeating itself and that their music lacked asperity, they will certainly put an intrigued ear to a few tracks, feel a breath of nostalgia run through them, then quickly move on to something else. - Official website
