Since his last production in 2019 (“Vile Nilotic Rites”), which was well received despite a feeling of redundancy or lack of inspiration, Karl Sanders has taken the time to compose some oriental mood music (“Saurian Apocalypse”), then replaced a few members of his team with Dan Vadim Von (Morbid Angel) taking over as bassist and a third guitarist (Zach Jeter) reinforcing the band. With this new line-up, the band released “The Underworld Awaits Us All”, featuring a host of singers. With this new album, Nile has all the cards in hand to recapture the violence and technicality of the past.

Intensity, pushed to the limit and intensified by the guitar trio, is the bedrock of the record. Technique is omnipresent, with multiple variations, often on fast, uncompromising tracks ('Chapter for Not Being Hung Upside Down on a Stake in the Underworld and Made to Eat Feces by the Four Apes'). Terror billows out like thick, opaque smoke, as on 'Lament For Destruction Of Time', a track as intense as it is sweaty. Fortunately, a few deftly dissonant melodies are scattered here and there to smooth out the sheer brutality of the songs.

Nile seems to want to redraw the structure of his technical death metal and offers multiple ramifications to his songs. This variety does not detract from the coherence of the record, which is very solid, with unstoppable technique, brutality and variations all at the service of a structured musical discourse. We were used to the violent salvos of leaded guitars, but less so to the melodic passages or instrumental tracks that emerge from “Saurian Apocalypse” ('The Pentagrammathion of Nephren-Ka'). Last but not least, the solo guitar interventions are fast-paced, with their vibrato playing bordering on Morbid Angel-like rupture ('Stelae of Vultures'). The only regret is that the oriental notes are rather timid, as the Egyptian harmonies, which are the band's identity, are diluted in the flow of a violent death of very good workmanship but sometimes predictable.

“The Underworld Awaits Us All” is a dark, violent, hard-hitting record for fans of aggressive music, otherworldly travel and harmonic disorientation. Less timid and smooth than its predecessor, Nile's technical music, full of mastery and know-how, varied and percussive, will undoubtedly please fans of Egyptian terror.
