"With its pronounced metal side, Innerspace's third album, “The Last Sign”, is likely to leave some by the wayside."

In 2017, the Canadians of Innerspace dazzled the world of progressive rock with “Rise”, a second album of “tear-jerkingly beautiful” melodies, as rich as it was superbly interpreted, and gradually distancing itself from the floydian influences that strongly underpinned their first production. It took the band seven years to produce a successor to this masterpiece, making aficionados impatient to discover “The Last Sign”.

Impatience that immediately takes a phenomenal electric jolt with the opening track 'Illusion of the Day', a metallic firebrand driven by molten guitar and huge keyboard sounds backed by a heavy rhythm section, while Phil Burton lays his gravelly vocals on top. The few seconds of rest offered by the piano at the end of the track will soothe even the most sensitive ears, offering an obvious segue to 'Dying Dream', the first epic track, which in its first part rediscovers a style more in tune with the references evoked in the previous album, (i.e. Alan Parsons), warm vocals, piano, acoustic guitar and flute de rigueur. The surge of power that arrives in the middle of the track lends the song its full body, before it veers once again into a gruff metal mode, which 'Simple Mirror' does nothing to soften, with Phil Burton increasingly insisting on aggressive intonations.

You have to wait for 'Blurry Memory', not without first having had to endure 'Kyrie', an uninteresting classical instrumental, and then a sympathetic 'We Are One', bursting with magnificent backing vocals, to finally rediscover the essence of Innerspace that made the previous album so charming and interesting. Over the course of its 17 minutes, this magnificent track distills numerous variations in theme and intensity, alternating sung parts with classy instrumental passages, before a neo-sympho finale wraps the whole thing up in masterly fashion. The spell then continues with the six atmospheric minutes of the aptly named 'In Fine', which offers a well-deserved rest to the ears of listeners somewhat disoriented by the overly Metal direction taken by the band on the first half of “The Last Sign”.

Whereas “Rise” immediately won over the majority with its richness and variety, the metal side of “The Last Sign” is likely to leave some people by the wayside, especially as the inspiration seems somewhat blunted at times.
