"A logical complement to “Wall Of Eyes”, “Cutouts” is an introspective journey into the meanders of the experimental."

Just ten months after “Wall Of Eyes”, The Smile release their new album, “Cutouts”. The majority of the tracks were composed in 2022 and recorded at the same time as the previous opus, with of course the same orchestra and the same protagonists, Radiohead's Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood, as well as jazz drummer Tom Skinner.
So The Smile doesn't change its recipe, and takes us into a universe as unstructured as ever, with ten tracks that have nothing to do with each other, apart from the desire to break out of current musical moulds. We move from the soaring, synthetic atmosphere of 'Foreign Spies', worthy of a Vangelis, to the quirky 80s pop of 'Zero Sum', reminiscent of the Talking Heads. We could also mention the haunting, hypnotic 'Colours Fly', which could serve as a film soundtrack, or 'Bodies Laughing', closing the album on a lighter, more melancholy note.
Once again, Thom Yorke's angelic, high-pitched voice, combined with Tom Skinner's omnipresent, convoluted rhythms - which are beautifully highlighted in the mix - guide us through a labyrinth of contrasting emotions. Melodies and dissonances regularly intermingle in this maelstrom of sound that blows hot and cold, making listening both disturbing and soothing. As for the lyrics, they remain as enigmatic as ever, leaving much to interpretation.
Even more radical than “Wall Of Eye”, “Cutouts” is certainly not for all ears. A deeply introspective and technical album that requires careful and repeated listening to be tamed, it could just as easily be described as a brilliant work as a bloated, onanic object made solely for the pleasure of its authors. It's up to you to make up your own mind. - Official website
