Although formed in 2018, it was in 2021 that Blues Screen Of Death became Ruins Of Mars. With the arrival of Chuc Bawol on drums, the now trio took the opportunity to release their debut album entitled “Breaking News”. Three years later, they're back with a tantalizingly named “You Rock”, which should take them to the next level.

While the band from La Fère don't take themselves too seriously, they do take things seriously, starting with a high level of instrumental quality. Mikael strings together catchy riffs and swift solos, while the rhythmic pair demonstrate both power and dynamism. You only have to listen to the insane 'Drink Bleach' to realize that. And while the production isn't perfect, it does allow each instrument to shine. However, the vocals are a little too French-accented, with intonations reminiscent of the late Kevin DuBrow (Quiet Riot). Mikael does, however, display a fine range of skills, and it's certain that these minor weaknesses can be quickly ironed out.

The other strength of this opus comes from its variety, Ruins Of Mars being just as capable of paying homage to the hard metal of its origins as it is of veering towards a disturbing alternative rock whose solo would have nothing to envy to Tom Morello ('Unwelcomed Spirit'). As for references to the legends of the genre, we're reminded of AC/DC through a riff here ('You Rock') or a 'Thunderstruck'-style gimmick there ('Back With Thunder'). Iron Maiden is not far away on the heavy 'First Stone', while a nod to ZZ Top's 'La Grange' is made on 'Los Tres Puntos'. Finally, King Diamond's disguised face could almost emerge from the darkness of a theatrical, anguished and captivating 'Witch In Black'.

But these landmarks should not obscure the fact that this combo already possesses a clear identity, blending technique, variety, power and self-mockery. “You Rock” thus represents a solid foundation for a band that has all the qualities needed to aim higher, provided they can iron out a few flaws that are as visible as they are easy to mitigate. The road is thus wide open for Ruins Of Mars, whose goodwill generated by this second album will be a further asset in expanding their fan base.

WORLD ON ALERT: World On Alert (2024)
PROGRESSIVE METAL - Without revolutionizing the genre, “World On Alert” offers good thrash techno that's as technical as it is melodic.
THE COLD STARES: The Southern (2024)
ROCK - “The Southern” goes beyond confirmation for The Cold Stares and establishes itself as a work as indispensable as it is captivating, a veritable voyage of initiation through the music of the American South.
