Four years after “Preaching To The Choir”, Kalle Wallner is back this year, not with his favorite band RPWL but with his Blind Ego project, in which he usually gives free rein to his metal inspirations. The line-up is once again the same, with the exception of singer Scott Balaban, replaced by Kevin Kearns, a metalcore defector for the occasion (The Legion Ghost).

Fans of the band needn't worry about this arrival: Blind Ego hasn't tipped over into the extreme or changed its direction, even if Kearns allows himself a few howls on 'Spiders', the album's most energetic and heavy track. We find accessible rock songs with classic structures that rely on the main strength of its driving force, the guitar. Riffs of all kinds, saturated or acoustic, are omnipresent, as are aerial solos, and let us appreciate the technique and feeling of Kalle Wallner, who, by playing on equal terms with his singer, manages not to make the whole indigestible.

With competent musicians, vocals that are a little more modulated than on the previous album, often adding a touch of emotion, and fairly varied tracks that generate good vibrations, “The Hunting Party” could have been one of the albums of the year if a few elements hadn't diminished its impact, notably the absence of risk on songs that can be described as very wise and consensual. With the exception of 'In a Blink Of An Eye', which offers a fine build-up of power and a poignant final solo, and to a lesser extent the heavier, almost progressive 'Breathless', few tracks really stand out. While the choruses are often effective, the verses remain fairly common, especially the vocal parts. The same is true of some of the introductions, which create an intriguing atmosphere only to be shattered by a rather disappointing development ('The Hunting Party', 'Spiders').

All these subjective elements should not, however, detract from the overall good impression left by “The Hunting Party”. Blind Ego has serious arguments for appealing to a wide audience who appreciate beautiful melodies and soaring solos rather than technical feats.
