Since the superb, introspective “War In My Mind”, Beth Hart hadn't offered us any new compositions for five years. Only her “Tribute To Led Zeppelin” broke the silence. In other words, the release of a new opus in the year 2024 is something of an event. For this, the American has renewed the line-up that has always surrounded her, and has also called in some prestigious guests such as Slash and Eric Gales, who we meet again from the very first tracks of this album, which is not short of surprises.

Indeed, while it's already original to place these glorious guests directly on the two opening tracks, the rest of the album is surprising, varied and theatrical, making it captivating from start to finish. For “You Still Got Me”, the Californian decided not to set herself any artistic limits and to give free rein to her inspiration and desires. As a result, we're treated to everything from big blues-rock with a hard-rock edge ('Savior With A Razor') to a humorous piece worthy of a cabaret ('Never Underestimate A Gal'). On the other hand, a country tune paying homage to the legend of the genre ('Wanna Be Big Bad Johnny Cash') rubs shoulders with a haunting soul-jazzy ballad over which the shadow of Ella Fitzgerald hovers ('Drunk On Valentine'), without all this proving shocking.

This aesthetic emancipation is also striking in terms of interpretation, as Beth Hart gives us a veritable demonstration of her talent for storytelling, giving the whole a cinematic approach that would have made a perfect film soundtrack. The tension she instills in 'Don't Call The Police', as agonizing as it is fascinating, is probably the most striking example. By turns sexy ('Suga N My Bowl'), moving ('Wonderful World'), passionate ('Little Heartbreak Girl'), delicate ('You Still Got Me') or crooning ('Pimp Like That'), she's even capable of self-mockery on 'Machine Gun Vibrato', poking fun at her own mocked vocals.

So rich that it takes many listens to discover all its intricacies, “You Still Got Me” is a testament to a singer-songwriter who reaches the pinnacle of her art by demonstrating great creative freedom. If some criticized Beth Hart's mercantile intentions in making her latest albums more accessible, they can only bow to an approach that was risky from the outset, but whose result is majestic and bewitching from start to finish.

Magnifique.

BETH HART - FRANCE - MARCH 2020
Bewitching, touching, sensual, sensitive, endearing... Beauty plays us and plays tricks on us when the emotion is too strong, when the lyrics fly away, or when her musicians don't stop impressing her, even in the middle of a concert.
