In 2024, Australian band Anubis released their eighth album. Conceived during the Covid-19 pandemic, “The Unforgivable” is a concept album that tells the story of a young man attracted to a woman in the clutches of a religious cult in the United States, from which he manages to escape despite fierce indoctrination.

With “Homeless,” their previous album, Anubis simplified their message, shortening the compositions for a more direct, effective approach. This new album continues in part along the same lines, except that the ten tracks flow into one another to form a single 46-minute composition.

After a short instrumental introduction punctuated by a few Gilmour-like guitar notes, the piece takes off with a complex rhythm driven by the bass, which supports Robert James Moulding's vocals, full of syncopation and other offbeats. The tone then hardens to flirt with metal, with 'Alone' and 'The Chains' delivering ferocious, dark guitar riffs against a backdrop of ominous keyboards. The rhythm section literally carries the whole thing, with the production striking a perfect balance between the various instruments and vocals, completely immersing the listener in the story.

And it's clearly going to be difficult to pull yourself away before the end, as the variety of melodies and accompaniments fits the concept perfectly. The most striking progressive elements are regularly featured, notably the odd rhythms that punctuate the disturbing atmosphere of 'The End of the Age'. This doesn't prevent Anubis from delivering a beautiful ballad ('One Last Thing'), a breath of fresh air ideally placed in the middle of the album, while the liberating finale of ‘The Unforgivable’ pushes the boundaries of Spock's Beard-style flamboyance, all carried by an extraordinary performance from Robert James Moulding behind the microphone.

Now established as a sure bet in the progressive world, Anubis continues to delight the ears with its varied musical universe, carried by solid instrumentation and arrangements, and a top-flight singer. “The Unforgivable” is highly recommended.
