"With “Speed Of Darkness”, D-A-D have produced a decent album, though it is handicapped by too many tracks lacking energy."

Danish veterans D-A-D have always been praised for their live performances. However, their success has remained confidential, as the band has never managed to break through to the next level. Undeterred, the quartet continued to release albums, taking their time between releases. The new album is called “Speed Of Darkness”.

It begins with the double single released earlier: '1st, 2nd & 3rd', a blistering blast of direct hard rock with an excellent chorus driven by Jesper's raspy vocals. The Ghost' is catchy and melancholy. The veiled, pop-tinged vocals are impeccable, and there's a lovely airy rock solo. God Prays To Man' is an excellent, toe-tapping track, driven by a unifying chorus and an ebullient solo.

D-A-D then alternates between the good and the not-so-good. The generic tracks 'Speed Of Darkness', 'Head Over Heels', 'Crazy Wings', 'In My Hands' and 'Automatic Surivval' are unfortunately all from the same mould. The veiled catchiness of the vocals and a few sympathetic solos don't save them from boredom. On the contrary, the more energetic 'Live By Fire', 'Keep That Mother Down' and 'Everything Is Gone Now' raise the bar, buoyed by Jesper's vicious vocals. Finally, 'Strange Terrain' surprises and convinces with its fat, heavy stoner edge.

“Speed Of Darkness” feels like a rollercoaster. The good moments barely compensate for the weaker passages on a record that is far too long. D-A-D has delighted us so much that we've become demanding. A rather weak album that will struggle to find its place in the band's rich discography.
