The world of Eternal Drak (akin to Machine Head or Kreator) opens up once again on solid foundations with their latest album, “Imprisoned Souls”. The Canadian-based Colombians offer a work faithful to their hybrid metal, blending thrash, black and death, while infusing it with an unsettlingly horrific atmosphere. This opus plunges the listener into dark soundscapes, where each track evokes an oppressive and mysterious atmosphere. The opening track, 'Soul of Hate', sets the gloomy scene with its incisive riff and dynamic rhythm section, while Drakar's guttural voice acts as a sinister narrator guiding the listener through a haunted world.

Musically, “Imprisoned Souls” maintains the balance between raw intensity and slightly more nuanced passages in the development of the compositions. Tracks such as 'Circle Of Black Flames' and 'She's a Magnet' reveal a controlled aggression, building sound worlds where brutality rubs shoulders with disturbing melodies. Haunting Place' stands out for its surprisingly violent breaks, reinforcing the feeling of being in a haunted place. While the production is clear and precise, it sometimes lacks the roughness to amplify the terrifying effect the band seems intent on conveying. However, each instrument finds its place in the mix, contributing to this quasi-cinematographic experience.

The lyrics of “Imprisoned Souls” seem to play fully on the register of horror and the supernatural. They evoke tormented souls, wandering spirits and cursed places like warfields - 'The Mist' illustrates this with the invisible bonds that keep souls trapped in eternal suffering. These themes, though classic in extreme metal, are carried through with a narrative approach that reinforces immersion. There are also a few references to local myths and real-life experiences, adding a touch of authenticity to the whole.

“Imprisoned Souls” is an album that plays to Eternal Drak's usual strengths, while drawing on a horrific theme to enrich its universe. Although the whole may lack the risk-taking that would make it stand out from the crowd, this is paradoxically what should appeal to fans of dark stories and intense metal. A coherent, masterful work, ideal for evenings when darkness seems to reign.

ALTERNATIVE ROCK - Between controlled introspection and restrained rage, Seether returns with “The Surface Seems So Far”, an album that flirts with fine ideas without ever quite recapturing the raw sparkle of its debut.
