"“Turbulent”, Never Elected's debut album, is a success despite what might appear to be a lack of stylistic unity."

While Alice Cooper was singing his own praises on 'Elected' in 1973, a band from Washington, D.C., was proclaiming its ineligibility for 2024. Never Elected had everything going for it after being nominated at the Wammies (the American capital's equivalent of the Grammies) as best metal/hard rock band of the year. The band didn't win, but they did benefit from the opportunity to showcase their appropriately-titled album: “Turbulent”.
Listeners, grab a shield and put away the breakables. Because with Never Elected, it shoots in all directions. Whereas “All My Life” gave us the delightful impression of listening to a rather crazy hard rock band, the start of the album opens up a horizon closer to grunge. The Americans boast of having multiple influences in their music (Soundgarden, Jeff Buckley, Nirvana, Gun's And Roses, Queens Of The Stone Age...), but they are very well balanced and the band has enough glibness to digest them.
Each track is a real surprise package. Never Elected plays with tormented and agitated climates (the muscular guitars on 'It's Over' or on 'So Damn Easy'), as much as with the ambiences (deceptively calm as on 'Time' or 'Stab Me' or even acidic on 'Voice Inside'). The heavy 'One Of These Days' shows us that the band could easily evolve into a real metal band. The introspective lyrics are perfectly suited to Suijt Kumar's vocals, which could best be described as a poignant, magnetic howl, though sometimes a little too haunting, as on 'Death Complaint'.
Never Elected's first album and first success. To accuse “Turbulent” of lacking unity would be nonsense, for it is these chaotic compositions that articulate the American band's way forward. We're likely to be hearing a lot more from this Washington combo very soon! - Official website
