Coma Rossi hails from India, a vast country whose musical riches are increasingly being discovered, far beyond folk clichés. With groups such as Bloodywood, Screetus, Hoia, Rainburn and Coshish, the country of a thousand gods is beginning to reveal its talents. Initially formed as a band, Coma Rossi has refocused as a duo featuring Gaurav Govilkar, versatile on almost all instruments and vocals, and Diane Galen on drums. “Void”, released in the middle of summer, is their second album following a self-titled debut.
The duo's melancholy post-rock, sometimes flirting with doom, evokes the sensitivity and emotion of Anathema. Their massive, enveloping sound transports the listener into an introspective universe. Hypnotic, shamanic riffs, reminiscent of Mono, form the backbone of their music, creating an immersive atmosphere. Right from the opening track ('Wither'), Coma Rossi lays the foundations of its sonic edifice. The album explores contrasts, moving from moments of raw power to moments of almost luminous clarity. The vocals, though fragile, add a unique emotional dimension, accentuating the feeling of being constantly on a precarious balance.
The overall atmosphere may seem oppressive, but therein lies Coma Rossi 's talent: surprising the listener with unexpected nuances. Falling Apart' perfectly illustrates this approach, with its delicate acoustics bringing a comforting closeness, enhanced by dramatic electric passages and enveloping keyboards. This track serves as a soothing prelude to the explosion of 'This Red Sky', the album's real highlight. The heavy, omnipresent bass underpins repeated riffs that intensify with metallic attacks, adding a dark, violent depth. The progressive structure of the composition, alternating between ethereal passages and moments of brutality, maintains interest from start to finish.
As the album progresses, a feeling of depression sets in, accentuated by an oppressive monotony. However, Coma Rossi manages to introduce calmer, more atmospheric passages, providing welcome variety. 'Small Ideas' once again stands out for its soothing acoustics, while 'Farm of Lights' evokes an almost sacred atmosphere with end-of-the-world vocals. The album concludes on a dark, strangely optimistic note with 'In Circles'. This mournful yet cathartic finale sees the almost mutinous piano notes crushed by an overpowering wall of sound.
By switching to two, Coma Rossi hasn't lost any of its strength - quite the opposite, in fact. “Void” is an album that will leave no one indifferent, offering with its few bright spots an ideal gateway for those wishing to discover this singular style. - Official website
