Red Mourning is one of Music Waves' favorite bands. Over the years, they've carved out their own distinctive identity, renewing the metal universe. The previous album (“Flowers & Feathers”) was a warm, intense journey. Now, with “Acoustic”, the band offers a selection of its songs in a stripped-down version, further aligning the band with its blues roots.
“Acoustic” is a way for the band to lay themselves bare, to express the essence of their songs, with the vocals as the highlight. The voice is as captivating alone on stage ('Come To Bury') as it is harmonized with precision ('Calls Of Pan'). Freed from his metal chains, Jean-Christophe Hoogendoorn is truly at ease. The acoustic arrangements are beautiful, as brilliant as they are peaceful. The guitars offer pared-down passages of great beauty, full of silky arpeggios ('A Whole Different Life'), caressing mid-tempo rhythms ('Blue Drums') or solitary parts that adorn the tracks with gentle tones ('A Whole Different Life'). The harmonica sometimes adds a mellow note ('Come To Bury'). Red Mourning transfigure their songs so successfully that they seem reborn and sound better when they put the lyrics center stage. Some fans may regret the absence of metal elements, even if a spirit of revolt hangs over the record. In the end, it's by removing elements that the band paradoxically strengthens its music and intensifies its message.
Red Mourning masterfully revisits its past, injecting a new freshness and a healthy dose of blues into its songs, which, once stripped down, sound even better. Far from the heavy rhythms and saturated guitars to which the band has accustomed us, “Acoustic” is definitely a seductive record, - Official website
