With Johannes Braun now involved in a variety of parallel activities (production, participation in various projects...), it almost seemed as if Kissin' Dynamite had been away for longer than that. Yet “Back With A Bang! “ maintains the rhythm of a discographic release every two years that had only been interrupted by the label change and the COVID between “Ecstasy” (2018) and “Not The End Of The Road” (2022).
To meet expectations, the Braun brothers' gang offer their traditional recipe of energetic riffs, catchy melodies and unstoppable choruses. A few Bon Jovi touches are sprinkled throughout an autobiographical 'Raise Your Glass', recounting the story of a band of buddies whose band is now unmissable. The 80s-sounding keyboards and talkbox are out in force, providing a delicious balance between good humor and melancholy. A few southern-rock elements are also delicately integrated into the riffs of 'The Devil Is A Woman', whose chorus sweeps everything along in its wake, or the bouncy, equally irresistible 'When The Lights Goes Out'.
In short, Kissin' Dynamite does Kissin' Dynamite, which will both satisfy fans of the genre and exasperate those who like to take risks. That's the problem with this opus, which is a true demonstration of a band that has reached maturity and has mastered its art, but whose mastery doesn't completely make up for the relatively classic approach of its authors. But apart from 'More Is More', with its hyper-predictable chorus, and a slight abuse of woo woo woo on 'Iconic', everything is perfect and brings the good humor and positive energy that fans want to receive from our favorite germans. Johannes Braun is imperial and dominates his subject, varying his vocals with disconcerting ease, while the pair made up of his brother Ande and fellow musician Jim Müller churn out riffs of unparalleled effectiveness and solos that are as swift as they are luminous.
Losing in spontaneity what it gains in maturity, Kissin' Dynamite makes this “Back With A Bang! “a truly flawless new work that's sure to rank high among the genre's annual releases. A slight note of melancholy emerges and is at the origin of one of the band's most beautiful pieces ('I Do It My Way') and could represent an avenue to be explored to enable the quintet to renew themselves a little and avoid falling into a redundancy which they nevertheless dodge here. - Official website
