Polarys is a French heavy metal band with a progressive edge, complex yet straightforward musical structures and intricate harmonies. Their work explores a personal science-fiction universe. Their first album, "The Va'adian Chronicles", was of the highest quality, with a captivating story to tell. For "Cosmic Singularity", which continues the exploration of this universe, Giovanni Dall'ava takes over the solo guitar parts, bringing both a technical and melodic touch. "Cosmic Singularity" ranks alongside The Expanse, Interstellar, Star Wars and Starship Troopers... As an overlay or a Z series?
"Cosmic Singularity" is a space voyage guided by the hum of the overpowering bass, by riffs somewhere between thrash, heavy and speed. The groove is pervasive and the sublime voice reminiscent of John Arch (ex. Fates Warning); the solitary guitar develops highly melodic phrases bordering on shred. As for the story, it's inspired by the great masters of SF such as Robert Heinlein, A.E. Van Vogt and Arthur C. Clarke, and finds resonance on all the band's records. On intense, square metal foundations ('The Warrior's Pledge') inherited from power or speed, Polarys weaves a harmonic web punctuated by passages of guitar bravura ('The Warrior's Pledge') with insane mastery ('The Long Dark'). The vocals are the essence of the record, thrilling with their distinctive grain and heady, sing-along melodies ('Back To War'). The latter sometimes dare to take a step aside when tinged with exoticism and singularity ('Cosmic Singularity'). The progressive spirit is to be found in the harmonies or in the rhythmic instability that seems to emanate from 'Trapped In The Hub'. The power, fragility and gentleness of the vocals add an extra touch of soul, calming the bite of thick riffs or raspy intonations borrowed from death metal ('Back To War').
"Cosmic Singularity" has all the qualities to become a classic of the genre, mastered from start to finish, and its luminous, technically-loaded music will delight more than just fans of the genre. Polarys is back with a vengeance, with sublime production, technique, power, captivating melodies and sugary sweetness. - Official website
