The kings of French technical grindcore are back for another violent and unhealthy journey. Since “Obscene Repressed”, the band has taken their blend of ultra-violence and technique to a new level. A few years on, with almost metronomic regularity, they release “Ekom” with surprising depth and ultra-powerful music. Welcome to the gloomy, to the land of the absurd, for a trip into a world where the norm is scarier than deformity...
Benighted pushes their style to the extreme, painful and violent ('Scars'), punctuated by rare moments of spectral sweetness worthy of a John Carpenter soundtrack ('Prodome'). Between macabre reveries, nocturnal terror and paralyzing anguish, a complex and violent music bursts into our ears, with a few melodic wisps ('Mother Earth, Mother Whore'). Carried by a macabre theme, Benighted probes the soul and analyzes psychological detours to reveal a statement about the human being and our inner darkness.
The band, steadfast, compose great moments of intense, nervous grindcore ('Morgue'). The riffs are murderous, perfectly matching the ultimate violence, supported by huge drums ('Morgue') that build rhythms packed with technique, subtlety, groove and finesse ('Ekbom'). The vocals use multiple registers, plunging into abysses or climbing to high peaks. All this might have sounded classic, were it not for the quality of the lyrics which are the record's stroke of genius, black poems bathed in fear.
Benighted release a frightening work that seeks emotions at the heart of the unspeakable. All the instruments on this record make it one of this year's essentials. Even with its classic form, the unsuspected evocative power of its content overwhelms like a tsunami. This is one of those rare grindcore albums that grips the heart to the point of tears. “Ekbom” is a total success, to be listened to urgently and enjoyed without moderation. - Official website
