"A tempting project, 'Today Was Yesterday' is nothing more than a hectic rock ballad under the Californian sun."

Today Was Yesterday promised to be an exciting project. Bassist and singer Angelo Barbera, who has accompanied Perfect Stranger, Deficit, Red Square Black and The Doors live, and his good friend the drummer Ty Dennis (Fire Bug as well as Deficit and The Doors live) have decided to take to the rock road. To accompany them on their journey, the two men recruited Ed Roth on keyboards and above all Robby Krieger and Alex Lifeson, guitarists with the legendary The Doors and Rush respectively!
The album gets off to a flying start. Right from the start, we know we're in for a bumpy ride. The guitars are out in front and a shower of electric arpeggios falls on our ears. Angelo Barbera's deep voice is as warm as the Californian sun. The two guitarists give it their all for solo escapades that will delight fans. Ed Roth also has his moments, like his organ solo on 'I Take All'. It's his extraterrestrial keyboards that launch his band into orbit on 'My Dog Is My God', a sophisticated, tempestuous track. The album's highlights, 'Faceless Faraway Song' and 'On My Own', become more elusive, changing course along the way.
However, despite the enthusiasm, the band's formula runs out of steam as the album progresses. The songs in the second half resemble their predecessors and lack variety and new colours. 'If I Fall (Silly Games)' is a slow-motion blues that seems to stretch on ad nauseam, the only pretext being guitar solos. Even Angelo Barbera's vocals lose their intensity track after track. 'My New Look' ends the album on a nostalgic note; successful as it is, this track was perhaps not the best choice to end the album with such a cruel lack of dynamism.
Today Was Yesterday's debut album is a pleasant listen, thanks in no small part to the contributions of its two guitar heroes. However, this project would have deserved to be a little less monolithic, a little less set in its ways. So we eagerly await its successor. - Official website
