"If you like Pink Floyd-style ambiences, "Empty" is an album that should fully satisfy you."

Kristoffer Gildenlow, the brother of Pain Of Salvation's lead singer Daniel, left us in 2021 with a very introspective "Let Me Be A Ghost" that didn't particularly exude joie de vivre. He returns three years later with "Empty", paradoxically recorded in 2019 at the same time as "Homebound". The Covid pandemic has come and gone, upsetting the plans of yet another artist.
Kristoffer Gildenlow has always taken great care with sound and arrangements, proposing a predominantly acoustic score and offering a fairly varied array of instruments. This is once again the case on "Empty", which features beautiful piano melodies ('Harbringer Of Sorrow', 'Beautiful Decay'), some violin accompaniment ('Turn It All Around', 'Means To An End') and rather diversified vocal lines, chorused and sometimes slightly doctored.
The notable difference with his previous work comes from the use of the guitar, which seems to have benefited from the musician's progress. It is the centerpiece of tracks that are more melancholy than sad, and transcends every intervention. In atmospheres inspired by Pink Floyd, each solo takes the compositions into a new dimension, allowing us to appreciate the many stylistic figures, the touch and the feeling that emerge ('Down We Go').
Certainly the least personal but most accessible work, "Empty" is probably not the album to recommend for entering Kristoffer Gildenlow's tortured universe, but it does offer a glimpse of the lighter, steamier atmospheres and luminous solos. - Official website
