Life isn't always a smooth ride, and Walter Trout is probably one of the artists best placed to attest to this. Yet since 2015 and his sublime "Battle Scars", he has persisted in confronting all the trials of his existence to extract messages of courage and optimism. While "Ride" was no exception to the rule of discographic releases following one another with a maximum gap of two years to offer their batches of positive and luminous pieces, here is a "Broken" on which the current harshness of the world seems to have left its mark.
Indeed, the eponymous title track, which opens this new opus with Beth Hart, sees these two skinned evoke their anguish at having to relive ordeals that have marked them to the very depths of their beings. A painful ballad with a poignant, haunting refrain, it immediately sets this album in a darker mood than Walter Trout has been accustomed to over the past decade. We find a disillusioned, melancholy man on 'No Magic (In The Street)', which precedes a downright angry 'I've Had Enough'. Once again a duet, but this time with the astonishing Dee Snider, it's been a long time since the master of the house has shown such rage. Another dark, inescapable piece, 'Heaven Or Hell' offers an eerie introduction and proves to be both heavy and hard-hitting.
"Broken" is not a depressive work, however, and even shows a variety that includes a few surprises. 'Turn And Walk Away' ventures into twilight bluegrass territory, while 'Bleed' takes us into boogie-rock worthy of John Lee Hooker or ZZ Top. With the hauntingly majestic 'Love Of My Life', Walter Trout unleashes a jazzy instrumental ballad, while 'Falls Apart' soars into an ethereal pop-rock alternating between despondency and hope. Reinforced by a few classic and luminous pieces to restore the audience's confidence ('Courage In The Dark', 'Breathe'), this collection is further proof of this musician's ability to challenge and renew himself.
Always in touch with the reality of the world around him, the blues-rock survivor shows here that his optimism is not impervious to worrying current events. With "Broken", he doesn't hesitate to take a few risks to offer a varied and captivating work, once again touching the listener to the very depths of his being. At the age of 72, Walter Trout proves that wisdom has nothing to do with blindness, and that optimism doesn't have to mean denial of difficulties and dangers. - Official website
