Rage has always liked to go for it. But with “Resurrection Day” lacking in highlights and often freewheeling, it had shown its limits. Now back as a trio with the departure of Stefan Weber, Peavy's band have taken their time to come back. “Afterlifelines” sees Rage hit back hard with a double album for an hour and a half.
“Afterlifelines” features short, dynamic tracks. 'End Of Illusions', 'Under A Black Crown', 'Afterlife', 'Mortal' and 'Shadow World' are all in a melodic heavy speed vein. Peavy shows power and the choruses are catchy, while guitarist Jean Bormann is outstanding. The more biting 'Dead Man's Eyes' and 'Waterwar' are Thrash bombs. 'Toxic Waves', 'Justice Will Be Mine' and 'Life Among The Ruins' are melodic, with catchy riffs and solos.
“Afterlifelines” sees Rage return to their symphonic love affair, without sacrificing directness and freshness. 'Cold Desire', 'Root Of Our Evil', 'Curse The Night', 'One World' and 'It's All Too Much' form a quintet close to the spirit of “XIII”. Bormann delivers solid solos with an airy feel, alongside some lovely orchestral melodic moments.
Over 20 minutes, with 'Dying To Live', 'The Flood' and 'Lifelines', Rage recaptures the strength of the “Lingua Mortis” era. The first is a splendid ballad carried by a melancholy Peavy. The second keeps the theme going, with a powerful edge, splendid orchestrations, an effective chorus and a brilliant solo. Finally, 'Lifelines' is an epic whirlwind, carried by a Peavy in a state of grace, charming, theatrical and raging.
Highly ambitious, “Afterlifelines” lives up to expectations. Rage has rediscovered its class and has signed a splendid record, a perfect concentrate of the best of the band's art, between heavy and orchestral power. After so many years in the business, to sign such a record is a tour de force that commands respect. - Official website
