Three years ago, a new band named after its lead singer, James Durbin, emerged from almost nowhere. "The Beast Awakens" caught the attention of old-school heavy metal fans, and Judas Priest fans in particular, who rediscovered their childhood sweetheart, the famous screamer Rob Halford, in this kid just out of the American Idol radio contest. The time has come for the Santa Cruz native to offer a successor to his first album. "Screaming Steel" has arrived on our turntables, and it's fair to say that the Californian has not denied his influences.
Lovers of uncompromising heavy metal, but also of NWOBHM, twinkling guitars and aggressive, even screaming vocals, this is the record for you. The young man's unconditional love for Judas Priest and his peers shines through this opus. The musical style is retro, but the relentless production gives it a new lease of life.
The American, ex-Frontman of Quiet Riot, noticed by Alan Parsons who invited him on his recent 'From The New World' and founder of the group Cleanbreak with members of Riot and Stryper, is on a roll, and his faith in the revival of his beloved heavy music is certainly contributing to this. Propelled into a bygone era, the listener can only be struck by the energy catapulted throughout the ten tracks here. With dynamism and vitality, the flame of yesteryear is rekindled at the heart of a maelstrom where the harmonies of the 80s English wave are at one with the power of American metal from the same era. Less immediately catchy than the previous album - the melodies lean less towards the easy listening side of melodic metal - this work, on the other hand, lures you in over time.
Throughout the opus, and often even within the same track, you come across old friends such as Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and Helloween for the most obvious ones, while feeling the presence of a few others like Manowar ('Made Of Metal'), Savatage ('Rebirth') and even Thin Lizzy ('Beyond The Night'). There's no stopping James Durbin and his bandmates' boundless energy, no saving mid-tempo, no restful ballad.
"Screaming Steel" is a tribute to the classics of the genre and may well open a window onto the future thanks to a modern sound that manages to keep the album from falling into a guilty state of obsolescence. It's a welcome history lesson for youngsters, but also a respectful dedication to those who fell into heavy metal in their earliest childhood. - Official website
