If Unprocessed doesn't ring a bell, the German quartet are no beginners, having released no fewer than four albums and an EP since their formation in 2013. But their new effort, "... And Everything in Between", could well be a significant milestone, thanks in part to the presence on one of the tracks of the guitar phenomenon of the moment, Polyphia.
Indeed, the stand-out track on this album is probably 'Die on the Cross of the Martyr'. This track is a powerful monster, with dirty synths, iconic harmonic tappings popularised by Eddie Van Halen in Unprocessed style and, of course, the dizzying solo shared by Polyphia's Tim Henson and Scott LePage helping to create a track that's simply insane with technicality.
But to sum up this new release from the Germans as a simple - albeit prestigious - collaboration would be highly reductive. From the very first notes of opener 'Hell', the cinematic feel of the track grabs you by the scruffy distortions and electronic elements, and suddenly the massive, technical guitars come out in Meshuggah mode, accompanied by Manuel Gardner Fernandes' abrasive vocals, adding to the sombre atmosphere. First track, first sonic explosion with this insane break. As if it and its predecessor were one and the same, 'Lore' follows without a moment's pause, still in the same aggressive mood, but with groovy bass and melodies that transport us into an ethereal universe.
"And Everything in Between" is a technical monument whose recipe is perfectly summed up on the two opening tracks and the famous guest track featuring members of Polyphia. But to avoid repetition and leave the necessary breathing space, the Germans modulate their formula as on 'Thrash' or 'Glass', deepening the atmospheric, soaring aspect of their music and gradually increasing the intensity. 'I Wish I Wasn't' is similar in content but differs slightly in form, starting quietly with driving grooves and clean vocals before degenerating into dizzying riffs and frantic beats. Finally, the finale with 'Purgatory' is a truly intense firework display that condenses all the qualities developed on "... And Everything in Between", even if it ends with a synth melody that can leave you wanting more.
"... And Everything in Between" by Unprocessed is a musical adventure where you never really know what to expect, exploring all sorts of directions without worrying about genre labels. The band's hyper-experimental approach juggles styles, atmospheres and emotions to great effect. If you like technical virtuosity, head-bobbing grooves, kick-ass choruses or just fancy something a bit chaotic in the world of progressive music, then this album is definitely worth a listen. - Official website
